Mary's Song: Who is Jesus? S1 E5 Notes

Pastor Adam James
February 24th, 2019 Sermon Notes
Text: Luke 1:39-45 “Who is Jesus?”

Sermon Notes:
Mary’s Situation…. Really put ourselves in her shoes…
Mary’s Options… How could she have responded? (Fearful, Reluctant, Anxious…)
Mary’s Response… A Heart & Mind & Soul of Worship (Humbled, Faith-filled, Joyful…)

What Fills Mary’s Song of Worship?

(1) Her Heart - her desire for God to be glorified

“My soul glorifies the Lord and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior.”

  • Deep, Internal Passion / External Praise (Forged, not faked or forced)
  • Glory & Joy go together…as we glorify God we experience joy and as we find joy in God we glorify Him… Vertical alignment… Salvation… (Illust. - Shopping cart with bad wheel…out of alignment/no good, vs. in alignment, smooth flow)
  • The Mystery of life…where is true happiness/joy found? (Illust. - puzzles Jesus is the missing piece…when he enters His place in your life there can be celebration & rest… “You have made us for yourself, O Lord, and our heart is restless until it rests in you.” (Augustine)

(2) Scripture - her mind soaked…Hannah’s prayer, Psalms, OT history

Don’t be intimidated & Don’t let your love for Scripture grow cold (Illust. - Dial up vs. Fiber optic… give it time, we all start with dial up :-)

“Let us strive, every year we live, to become more deeply acquainted with Scripture. Let us study it, search into it, dig into it, meditate on it, until it dwell in us richly. In particular, let us labor to make ourselves familiar with those parts of the Bible which, like the book of Psalms, describe the experience of the saints of old. We shall find it most helpful to us in all our approaches to God. It will supply us with the best and most suitable language both for the expression of our wants and thanksgivings. Such knowledge of the Bible can doubtless never be attained without regular, daily study. But the time spent on such study is never mis-spent. It will bear fruit after many days.” - J.C. Ryle

(3) Actions of God - What He’s Done…

Saved Mary, Been mindful of her condition, Done great things for her, Extends his mercy to all who fear Him, Scattered the proud, Brought down rulers, Lifted the humble, Filled the hungry, Sent the rich away empty, Helped Israel, Fulfilled His promise to Abraham

  • He has ________…” - Past tense (aorist) - past & future fulfillment
  • God is mindful of us… even/especially the humble poor… the helpless…
  • “From now on all generations will call me blessed” - This positional identity, future reality, enabled Mary to endure the shame & jeers of disgrace…

(4) Attributes of God - Who He Is…

His Actions Reveal His Attributes
God is Mighty, Holy, Merciful (v.49-51)
God is Just, Good, Faithful (v.52-55)

“God cannot be greater than He is, but He can be greater in you than He is at present. He cannot increase; there cannot be more of God than there is, but there may be more of God in you. More of His great love, more of His perfect holiness, more of His divine power may be manifested in you, and more of His likeness and light may be revealed through you.” - Charles Spurgeon - Mary’s Magnificat, April 22, 1875

(5) Principles of God - How He Works… (v.50-56)

1 - His Mercy is Available to Any/All who Fear Him (Inclusive… not just Mary/Israel)
2 - He opposes/scatters/brings down the Proud & Haughty
3 - He intervenes on behalf of & lifts the Humble
4 - He fills the Hungry with good things, Satisfies the Hungry
5 - The Ungodly Rich, the self-sufficient, He sends away empty
6 - His value system is different than the World’s …this New King & His Kingdom

Revolutionary Mary?

How not to read this - liberation theology, social/political revolt
The kingdom does not advance by a social/political/physical revolt/takeover… but by spiritually transformed hearts/lives…subversive reordering of power structures, not coercive … exchange of ideas… public court of appeal… public square… not pitchforks and torches… spiritually violent (Saul/Paul) not physically violent…

Conclusion:

How could Mary have responded?
How do you respond when life is uncertain, stressful, difficult?
Is your soul free to worship God?

TODAY…You can…

  • Be a recipient of His mercy…
  • Say a humble prayer… “God have mercy on me, a sinner”
  • Lift a joyful praise… “My soul magnifies the Lord, my spirit rejoices in God my Savior”
  • Trust a faithful promise…
