Who Is Jesus Devo: Forged: A Heart of Worship

S1E5 - Devotional - “Forged: A Heart of Worship"

46 And Mary said:

“My soul glorifies the Lord

47 and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior,

48 for he has been mindful

of the humble state of his servant.

From now on all generations will call me blessed,

49 for the Mighty One has done great things for me—

    holy is his name.

Luke 1:46-49

“My soul glorifies the Lord…”

It should come as no surprise to us that Mary, the mother of our Lord, had a heart of worship. Not only was she grateful for God’s intervention in her life and in the people of Israel, she was grateful for the gift of salvation. We have no indication in Scripture that Mary was sinless, as some mistakenly believe. Rather, Scripture clearly teaches that she needed a Savior and herself proclaimed, “my spirit rejoices in God my Savior.” Her humble, faith-filled response serves as a wonderful example.

The assignment to be the mother of the Messiah, though an eternal privilege, would not have been easy. She was young, poor, & unwed. She faced scandal and disgrace… who would believe her, that her baby was the result of a miracle of the Holy Spirit? As Simeon would tell Mary after Jesus’s birth, “A sword will pierce your own soul too,” (Luke 2:35) and she would watch her firstborn son be crucified at the young age of 33.

Forced, Fake, or Forged?

As Mary pondered the reality of her task and the implications of Jesus’s coming, worship flowed from her soul. This was no superficial or shallow praise. Her worship was not forced or fake, it was forged. Perhaps on the 100 mile walk from Nazareth to the hill country of Judea to Elizabeth’s as she pondered these things and the message from the angel Gabriel? Perhaps as she reflected on Hannah’s prayer (1 Samuel 2:1-10), the Psalms, and history of Israel that she knew so well from her formational days in the Synagogue?

Either way, deep called to deep in the depths of her heart and she knew that she knew that she knew that God, the Mighty One, had done great things for her.

May we, like Mary, have a heart of worship forged deep in our souls. May we long to glorify the Lord and rejoice in God our Savior. Holy is His name!
