Who Is Jesus The Unexpected Birth of Jesus S1 E7

And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night. 9 An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. 10 But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people. 11 Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord. 12 This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.”

13 Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying,

14 “Glory to God in the highest heaven,
and on earth peace to those on whom his favor rests.” - Luke 2:8-14

Time and time again we see God choosing the lowly, the humble, and the simple things and people of this world to confound the wise, the rich, and the powerful. (See 1 Corinthians 1:27-29). The birth of Jesus just might be the crown jewel of them all.

Consider this list: The people of Israel, Joseph & Mary, the town of Bethlehem, the shepherds, a manger, a baby. At every turn these were the least and the last. The weak and the lowly. The poor and the powerless.

Why would God choose to bring His Messiah into the world in this way?

There’s something about the way Jesus came that points to who he came for. He didn’t just come for the wealthy and the powerful… He came for the whole world, and especially the humble and the poor in spirit.

“Sometimes when God is doing His best work its hard for us to tell.” - Pastor Josh McPherson

If we’re not careful, we can fall into the trap and the lie that when God is working it will always be big and powerful and noticeable and even spectacular. But oftentimes, even the supernatural working of God is cloaked in the humble and the mundane. Don’t lose heart friend, God is at work.

May we humble ourselves as those ready to receive the grace and powerful redemptive work of God, and may we not lose sight of the faithful unfolding of God’s plan, even when we don’t see it in the places and ways we first expect.
