Have you ever wondered if God is with you even though you can't see him? If God could deliver you in spite of what you've done? These questions and more are raised in one of the Bible's most under-preached and misunderstood books. In this sermon, Pastor Josh shows how the challenges that have scared away commentators from the "Godless" book of Esther actually contain the book's genius, mirroring our own experience of God when life hits crisis and despair.

In the godless book of Esther, a clear portrait emerges of two super-power Kings. The first king, King Xerxes, is the most powerful man on the planet, overseeing an empire the size of which has never before been seen in the history of the world. Babylon? Captured. Egypt? Overthrown. Greeks? Next on the hit list. His opulence, wealth, and power are unmatched, demonstrated in a 6-month party for 15,000 world leaders full of lavish food, drink, women, and debauchery. All is going well until a royal family disturbance spirals into a national crisis, and the buffoonery of human power gets put on full display. And that's just the beginning of the story...

At what point does assimilation in culture mean capitulation to culture? At what point does assimilating into culture become compromising towards God? How do we as Christians live in a world whose values are in direct conflict with our own? Withdraw? Fit in? Protest and criticize? As Christians called to live a distinctly different life than the world, where and how do we draw the line? In the sermon, Pastor Josh unpacks Esther chapter 2 as the sordid tale continues and the characters face this very dilemma.

Nothing is more fundamental to the human experience than asking the question “Who am I?” How you answer this question not only says everything about you, but also tells you where you’re going in your future. Your identity shapes your destiny. And nothing impacts your day to day life more than your identity. So what is it, where does it come from, and how can you know the source of it? In this powerfully practical sermon, Pastor Josh looks at a case study of two identities in the life of Esther and Haman from Esther chapter 5 that leads us all to face the question “Who or what is defining you?”

What choices lead to not being opposed by God, and how do we make them? How big of a deal is pride and humility in our every day life? How can we know that God is for us, not against us? The stakes could not be higher in this pivotal story in Esther...a King’s sleepless night, a kaniving narcissist’s plot, and a humorous yet devastating surprise twist combined for a powerful lesson in the dangers of pride and the beauty of humility in this power-packed story of life and death in every-day choices.

What does it mean to actually “live by faith?” And how can God be sovereign and yet our individual decisions actually matter? These questions and more Pastor Josh addresses as the story of Esther reaches its most intense moment. Esther puts her life on the line, standing alone and confronting two sadistic narcissists in an act of bravery and courage to save her people, and in so doing gives us a picture of what it means to walk in faith. Far from “hoping things work out,” we see that a life of faith is actually one of risk-taking decisive action.

Everyone is a leader because everyone has influence over someone. Which means it’s not a question of if you’ll lead, but how you’ll lead. And yet there’s one challenge, the single greatest leadership challenge, everyone faces that keeps them from becoming an effective leader. In this sermon Pastor Josh identifies that challenge as he unpacks the 3 makes of great leadership in the lives of Esther and Mordecai.

Even though the book of Esther never explicitly mentions God, when the “tables turn” in chapter 9, it suggests that he has been working his plan all along. We all love it when the “tables turn” in our favor. But how should we respond when we suddenly realize that God has been working in our lives when we weren’t sure that he was? And how can we actively participate in what he’s doing instead of just waiting for him to show up?
