Summer Daily Devotional - Colossians 3
Don't Be An Earth Brain
You've heard the saying, so heavenly minded, no earthly good. I'm not the first to point out how unbiblical this cliche actually is. It seems to imply that heavenly-minded people would be more productive if they were a little more earthly-minded. According to Paul, just the opposite is true...the more heavenly-minded you are, the more earthly good you become.
Here's what Paul says:
If then you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth. For you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. When Christ who is your life appears, then you also will appear with him in glory (Colossians 3:1-4).
The rest of Colossians 3 is a contrast between the life governed by a mind set on things above versus the life governed by a mind set on things that are on earth. Paul says to put to death the earthly way (vs 5-9), and then he says to put on the new self (vs 10-25). This "new self" is marked by a new way of relating to others. Just imagine if we were able to perfectly obey all of the commands in verses 10-25. Remember now, these are the fruits of the heavenly-minded person. If we could perfectly obey all of these commands, pretty much all of our earthly problems would disappear overnight.
Now of course we won't obey perfectly. And this too brings us right back to the importance of setting our minds on things above. Being heavenly-minded in the way that Paul is telling us to be means focusing on Christ. The good news of God's grace is that for those who are in Christ, their lives are hidden in Christ. This means our sin is covered...not "swept under the rug," but truly and legitimately covered, totally and completely taken care of in the death and resurrection of Christ. Now THAT is the kind of grace that empowers a new life of obedience.
So there you have it...if you want to live a transformed life on earth, then don't be an earth brain. Instead, be relentlessly focused on the eternal, gospel blessings and Kingdom realities of Jesus Christ. Look UP to Him and live new today.
