Summer Daily Devotional - Colossians 2
Don't Go Chasing Shadows
“So then, just as you received Christ Jesus as Lord, continue to live in him, rooted and built up in him, strengthened in the faith as you were taught, and overflowing with thankfulness. See to it that no one takes you captive through hollow and deceptive philosophy, which depends on human tradition and the basic principles of this world rather than on Christ.” (Col. 2:6-8)
Make no mistake, friends. We live in a battlefield. It’s a battlefield of ideas and a battlefield of “fine-sounding arguments” and “deceptive philosophy.” How can we navigate this battlefield today?
One step at a time.
Head up. Eyes focused. On Christ. Keep the main thing the main thing today.
All the treasures of wisdom and knowledge are found in Christ. There’s no need to chase the latest or greatest new book or author. The news feed and headlines and talk of the day provide nothing to nourish or satisfy your soul.
The winds shift in the world and try to pull us to the “new” and the “better” and the “urgent.”The world tries to manufacture its own “saviors” - Don’t be deceived! Christ is the Rock to cling to in the storm. He is the substance and reality that holds firm and gives true life.
Man-made religion and man-centered ideas will never bring the salvation, help, hope and peace we look for.The enemy will do whatever he can to get us tangled in the weeds of religion or the weeds of this world. Bogged down. Off-track. Focused on the wrong things. Looking in the wrong direction. The enemy would love for us to end up chasing shadows.
The shadow of religious legalism. The shadow of spiritual mysticism. The shadow of idle notions and deceptive philosophy.
All of these “shadows” are in Paul’s mind in Colossians 2. The reality however, is only found in Christ. He alone is the substance of truth and grace and power to free us from the life of sin and death that we once walked in. The “shadows” have no power over the sinful flesh.
Legalistic religion and spiritual mysticism are just two different ways of putting a fresh coat of paint on a rotten fence. It’s useless. Powerless.
Christ however, “forgave us all our sins! Having canceled the written code, with its regulations, that was against us and that stood opposed to us; he took it away, nailing it to the cross! And having disarmed the powers and authorities, he made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them by the cross!” (2:13-15)
That’s real power. Real victory. Real freedom. Real Substance.
So dear friends, just as you received Christ Jesus as Lord (by faith!), continue to live in him, rooted and built up in him, strengthened in the faith as you were taught, and overflowing with thankfulness.
Don’t go chasing shadows today.
