Season 2 - Going Public
Episode 4 - “Jesus Heals”
Pastor Adam James, May 19, 2019
Text: Luke 4:38-44, 5:12-16

$2.5 Billion worldwide already. Blockbuster. “Marvel: Endgame” The build up…11yrs, 22 movies. The trailer - a sneak peek, a taste, a hunger for more. Can’t wait for the full length feature film to be released… that’s like the kingdom of God. The “Now & Not Yet” Kingdom of God. Jesus inaugurated the kingdom; displaying what it is like and will be like, in part now, in full to come.

Two Stories, Seven Truths

Story 1 - Jesus Heals Simon’s Mother-in-law

Truth #1 - Jesus’ grace frees us for a life of service. (4:38-39)

-One of the ways you know if someone has really received and understood grace… they don’t just “take for themselves”… not just about “making my life easier” “me, me, me”… it’s about enabling us to love and serve Jesus & others

-The grace of God transforms our hearts into hearts that desire to give and to help others and to be quick to share with others the same grace we have received… “It’s better to give than receive.”

Truth #2 - Jesus is full of love and compassion. (40-41)

-Jesus loves people. We see him pouring out his life and energy to fulfill his calling and minister to people. We see the combination… compassion & power… tenderness & power… Lion & the Lamb… no one else like Jesus!

Truth #3 - Jesus was renewed in solitude with the Father. (42-44)

-v. 42 “They tried to keep him from leaving them”

-Communion with the Father is the source for strength & direction in ministry.

-Other people will always have an agenda for your life, but your calling comes from God.

-The demands & needs are never ending, at times you will disappoint people.

Story 2 - Jesus Heals a Leper

Leprosy is… (1) horrible, desperate condition - skin diseases, lonely condition, debilitating condition… “cursed”… “cast out”… People were quarantined to keep the disease from spreading through the community.

-“In one of the towns” ?! He wasn’t supposed to be there! Risked his life to get Jesus

-“Unclean, unclean” (Lev. 13: 45 “Anyone with such a defiling disease must wear torn clothes, let their hair be unkempt, cover the lower part of their face and cry out, ‘Unclean! Unclean!’ 46 As long as they have the disease they remain unclean. They must live alone; they must live outside the camp.)

Leprosy is… (2) a biblical metaphor for sin (Isa 1:4-6) we are afflicted… cut off…

-Notice the man’s attitude/approach - humble, submissive, desperate, faith-filled.

“Lord” - “If you are willing”

Truth #4 - Those who truly seek Jesus do so in a humble, trusting posture. (5:12)

Truth #5 - Jesus touches the untouchable. (13-14)

-An incredibly powerful gesture. He didn’t need to touch him. The man hadn’t had any human contact in years… Can you imagine how isolated and lonely he was?

-Never underestimate the power of appropriate loving touch.

Truth #6 - Jesus makes the unclean, clean. (13-14)

-Not just physical. He’s healing him emotionally. He’s restoring him to community.

-When the clean touches unclean, it becomes unclean. Opposite with Jesus!

-Follow the Law of Moses - Lev. 14… present yourself to the priest, he examines you, makes sacrifice… birds, lambs… blood on the ear lobe, blood on the thumb, blood on the big toe… “born again”… “new life”…

-Symbolic: LISTEN to God, SERVE God, WALK in His ways

-Foreshadowing Jesus as the sacrificial lamb, the sin offering, the guilt offering and the scapegoat, we aren’t just forgiven, we’re cleansed (Doctrine of Expiation)

-For anyone who feels dirty, defiled, cut off, unclean… the good news is that if you come to Jesus like this leper came to Jesus, you too can be embraced by Jesus, forgiven by Jesus, and cleansed by Jesus.

Physical Healing in the Now & Not Yet Kingdom

-Jesus didn’t come primarily to do physical miracles but proclaim the Kingdom (43)

-All who come to Jesus & enter the kingdom get healed, it’s just a matter of when.

-We pray, we ask, and we leave it up to God. His sovereign will chooses the timing.

-There are glorious treasures of faith found in the waters of affliction. We will identify with Jesus in his suffering in this life…and one day in His resurrection. A testimony of faith in the midst of physical suffering is powerful.

-Physical healing always points to greater Spiritual Truth.

-Two Ditches: Everyone should get healed NOW vs. NO ONE can get healed now.

Truth #7 - Jesus’ first coming was a foretaste of things to come.

“Then the angel showed me the river of the water of life, as clear as crystal, flowing from the throne of God and of the Lamb down the middle of the great street of the city. On each side of the river stood the tree of life, bearing twelve crops of fruit, yielding its fruit every month. And the leaves of the tree are for the healing of the nations. No longer will there be any curse. The throne of God and of the Lamb will be in the city, and his servants will serve him.” - Revelation 22:1-3

  1. Come to him humbly, with trust-filled requests for help
  2. Put your Hope fully in Jesus & the coming Kingdom (now & future)
  3. As Jesus has loved you, love others… Touch the untouchable…
  4. Receive the sacrificial grace of Jesus… his cleansing sacrifice (Expiation)
  5. Listen to God, Serve God, Walk in His ways (ear, thumb, toe)
  6. Follow Jesus example of private prayer
