Summer Daily Devotional - Philippians 3
"Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus" (Philippians 3:13-14).
What a profound way to start your day.
Forgetting what is behind, I strain toward what is ahead.
What if you started today like that? What if you approached your day with a clean slate? A fresh canvas?
Most of us (ok, all of us) wake up with baggage from yesterday.
Relational baggage. Emotional baggage. We don't forget what is behind; we live with it every day. We live with the album of our mistakes stuck on repeat, and we start our day with all the classics blaring in our head.
Which is to stay, we start our day from a position of defeat.
But what if we started our day differently?
What if—instead of wallowing in our mistakes—we woke up and resolved to live in the power of Jesus?
What if—instead of waking up festering over the way someone hurt you or fuming over the way someone treated you—you woke up resolved to forgive them and move forward?
The Jesus life is the onward life.
Onward from pain. Onward from brokeness. Onward from jealousy and relational drama. Onward from stubborn pride and judgmentalism. Onward from discouragement. Onward from ungodliness, anxiety, and frustration. Onward from selfishness and pettiness. Onward from impatience and irritability.
Towards the living Christ.
Towards godly attitudes.
Towards life in the Spirit.
Towards maturity and wisdom.
No more living life bogged down with yesterday's failures. Put the club down. Stop beating yourself up. Receive the love and forgiveness of God. And step towards the new life.
Which means, dear friend, today could be different.
You don't have to be the old you. You can be the new-you, today. The Spirit-filled you, the Jesus-loving you, the believe-the-best and extend grace quickly you. There is a prize to run for—a way of life to live towards—that's new and different from your yesterday-life.
To live forward, not backwards. To strain ahead, not get dragged behind. That is the life Jesus has for you. Not Pollyanna optimism that doesn't deal in reality, but gutsy grace that takes Jesus at His word and resolves with a kind of inner fortitude to live forward into the promises of God, today.
So here's to being a front-sight, action-oriented, forward-moving follower of Jesus Christ.
There is a path to follow that will lift you from the darkness and shadow of the flesh-driven life. Let's get after it.
