Who Is Jesus Devo: The Silence is Broken S1 E6
57 When it was time for Elizabeth to have her baby, she gave birth to a son.
62 Then they made signs to his father, to find out what he would like to name the child. 63 He asked for a writing tablet, and to everyone’s astonishment he wrote, “His name is John.” 64 Immediately his mouth was opened and his tongue set free, and he began to speak, praising God.
We first encountered Zechariah in Luke 1:5, when as a priest he was drawn by lot to go into the temple of the Lord to burn incense. He and his wife Elizabeth were “righteous in the sight of God”…but they were without a child because Elizabeth was barren. So when the angel Gabriel appeared to announce to Zechariah that his elderly wife would get pregnant and give birth to a son…you can imagine the shock & surprise!
Zechariah, although faithful to God, wavered in his faith and he doubted. He asked the angel… “How can I be sure of this??” And because of his unbelief, he was disciplined and afflicted by the Lord…he would be mute for 9 months until these things were fulfilled and his son was born. 9 months of silence.
What’s impossible with man is possible with God and sure enough, Elizabeth gives birth to a son! And this time, Zechariah gets it right. He follows the Lord’s instruction and names his son “John” (which means “The Lord is gracious”). Immediately at that moment… he gets his voice back and he praises God.
God is Speaking!
Not only is this story good news for Zechariah & Elizabeth, through the gift of a son… but this event also marked incredibly good news for Israel and for you and me as well. You see, this son, would be a great prophet of Israel…the one promised in Isaiah and Malachi who would go before and prepare the way for the Messiah, Jesus Christ… God’s Son.
Through the birth of John the Baptist, not only did Zechariah go from silence to speaking… but so too God broke 400 years of silence and once again sent a prophet to his people. God started speaking again too. And this time, it would be the last of the Old Covenant prophets because God was preparing to send not just another prophet, but His one and only Son.
The good news from John the Baptist is that he points us to Jesus Christ, who is the eternal Word of God, forever breaking the silence of God, forever speaking to His people. Good news! God has spoken and God is speaking. The silence is broken. What is He saying to you?
