Who Is Jesus Devo: The Temptation of Jesus S2 E1
“Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, left the Jordan and was led by the Spirit into the wilderness, where for forty days he was tempted by the devil. …When the devil had finished all this tempting, he left him until an opportune time.” - Luke 4:1, 2, 13
He really is a sly devil. Don’t be lulled to sleep! He comes at you when you’re weak and tired. He comes at you on the heels of a great victory or high point. He comes at you with a false promise, a barbed hook of death.
Jesus had just been baptized with heaven open over him, the Spirit descending upon him, as the Father publicly announced His full pleasure in His “Son”. But before Jesus launched into his public ministry…he had to first endure the onslaught of temptation and testing in the wilderness.
Be on guard! Satan is strategic. He makes his poisonous offers wrapped in some immediate pleasure. He questions and challenges our identity (“If you are…”) He’ll even use the Bible. But his aim is our destruction. His desire is for your worship.
Our Example & Victor
Jesus is both our Example and our Victor in his dealings with the enemy and temptation. Jesus endured the full weight of Satan’s temptations and never gave in. Look to Jesus in your hour of need and cling to the promises of God, which are far better than the false promises of our enemy. Stick close to the One who refuses his every ploy!
Every temptation the devil brought, Jesus countered with the Word of God. “It is written.” Paul tells us in Ephesians 6 that our only offensive weapon against temptation is the sword of the Spirit…the Word of God. Do you know it? Are you equipped with the truth to counter the attack?
There is a Way Out!
"No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it." - 1 Cor. 10:13
Are you enduring temptation? Are you fighting and resisting the worldly offers of our enemy? Have you just experienced a spiritual victory or highpoint? Stay alert! And join in the Lord’s Prayer… “lead us not into temptation but deliver us from the evil one.” (Luke 11:4)
